SUNY: Upstate Medical University is proud to house 11 different academic divisions, ensuring the highest-quality medical care for conditions ranging from Diabetes to cancer and heart disease.
Primary Care – Internal Medicine
Primary Care physicians and Internal Medicine specialists play a primary role in a patient's overall care. Typically, the first point of contact for a patient, Primary Care physicians provide comprehensive care for patients who are struggling with chronic or acute illness.

Cardiology
Cardiologists prevent, treat, and diagnose conditions of the heart, blood vessels, and circulation system. Interventional cardiologists perform cardiac catheterizations and procedures, including angioplasty. Electrophysiologists diagnose and treat disorders of the heart rhythm, often through catheterization techniques.

Dermatology
Dermatologists are dedicated to the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and management of patients with dermatological (skin) disorders. Our dermatologists offer a wide range of diagnostic services and treatments, including Mohs surgery.

Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism
Specialists in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism care for patients with disorders of the major glands of the body, Diabetes, osteoporosis, and other metabolic diseases. Through our Joslin Diabetes Center, we provide care to the largest number of patients with Diabetes of any center in Central New York.

Gastroenterology
Gastroenterologists provide care to patients with disorders of the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, and pancreas.

Hematology/Oncology
Hematology/Oncologists have special expertise in diseases of the blood and cancer. They are experts in the use of chemotherapy and cancer and in the treatment of problems in coagulation, anemia, and other blood disorders.

Hospital Medicine
A hospitalist is a physician dedicated to the care of a hospitalized patient. The program has full-time hospitalists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who are responsible for general medicine teams and the medicine consultation service. Duties include direct patient care, student/resident education, and quality improvement initiatives.

Infectious Disease
Infectious Disease (ID) physicians are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with infections and fevers. They provide consultative services to both inpatients and outpatients and continuous care for patients with HIV infection. In addition to diagnosing and treating infectious diseases, ID physicians also counsel healthy people who plan to travel to countries where there is an increased risk of infection.

Nephrology
Nephrologists are experts in diseases of the kidney and hypertension. They provide care to patients with chronic renal failure through their dialysis programs.

Pulmonary and Critical Care
Physicians trained in Pulmonary and Critical Care are experts in the care of patients with lung diseases such as pneumonia, asthma, tuberculosis, emphysema, and those who require intensive care. Critical Care Physicians direct the activities of the Medical Intensive Care Unit.

Rheumatology
Rheumatologists are specially trained to diagnose and treat swelling and pain. They are experts in diseases of the joints and soft tissues (tendons, ligaments, and bones) and care for patients with arthritis, gout, tendonitis, and a variety of other disorders.
